AP United States Government Summer Assignment 2017-2018

AP United States History Summer Assignment 2017-2018

English - Honors and Standard

The English Department at Northwest School of the Arts continues the expectation that all students will continue their education by reading the following novels in preparation of their English course. This is a requirement for all students. Upon arriving to class in August, students will be assessed on the selected novels.

English I:
Night by Eli Wiesel
*must complete a 1-page reflection due on the first day of class A/B.

English II:
Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
*must complete a 1-page reflection due on the first day of class A/B.

English III:
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

English IV:
Standard: 1984 by George Orwell
Honors: Beowulf by the Beowulf Poet
Several full-length translations of this epic poem are available online, are in the public domain ("free"), and will suffice for the purposes of this assignment. However, three outstanding translations are available in paperback and modestly priced--one is by Seamus Heaney, one by Burton Raffel, and another by J.R.R. Tolkein. These translations are particularly reliable and tend to be more "user friendly" than many alternative versions.
